A Better Me Challenge

I am uber excited to let you all know that I have joined the A Better Me Challenge run by fellow Mom Blogger and Olympian, Annett Davis of Fit Moms Fits Kids Club. Thanks to twitter and her lovely reminder tweet this morning I am on board.

The A Better Me Challenge starts January 4, 2012 and will run for 28 days. To get us starting the New Year on 'the good foot' (in my James Brown voice). Clearly I am excited about this challenge. I was searching for something to give me daily motivation and that took a holistic approach (mind, body & spirit) and Annett's challenge is going to do just that.

Visit her blog to learn more about the challenge and some tools you'll need for an EXCUSE FREE 28 days.

Getting ready for the 2012 race season!

Workout Train

Yes I am back on the workout train. I started 2 weeks ago with my co-workers, one of which happens to be sixtwentyseven. Below is my work schedule:

Monday: Spin Hybrid Class

Tuesday: C25K - treadmill workout

Wednesday: Off

Thursday: Butts & Guts Class

Friday: C25K - treadmill workout

Lets hope this sticks through the holiday season so I can loose some more of this baby weight.
Do you have a workout schedule that's working for you?

Mom on the Run

15th Annual Chicago Half Marathon & 5K
I wouldn't officially consider myself a runner, (maybe after a few more races and pounds) :-). I'm just a mom who enjoys racing for t-shirts and medals. LOL Sunday's race was a lot of fun and Jackson Park is beautiful. I even got asked about the Diabetes Action Team. It felt great talking about my Nana and all the work the Foundation is doing to find a cure for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
I can't wait until my next race.

Weekend Groove Music

This Sunday, I will be participating in the 5k portion of the Chicago Half Marathon & 5k. I was initially going to run the half (my bib says half marathon on it) but with family, work and fitting in a training schedule I was a bit overzealous. My goal is still to run a Half Marathon, hopefully to be achieved next year. This race is really special for me because I'm raising money for Diabetes in memory of my Nana, Evelyn Whitehead Williams and also because it's the Tenth Anniversary of 9/11.

Sole Debate...

This is a debate that I've been having internally for awhile. To put 'hard bottom' shoes on my new walker or to just let him embrace his 25% Nigerian heritage and go barefoot. After recent convos with my mom, sister-in-law (SiL), and mother-in-law (MiL), I decided to do some research and make an educated decision.

Our parent's and their parent's were told that 'hard bottoms' was the way to go. So, I spoke with my son's pediatrician, found a great article and the results are either to let your child go bare foot (in the home of course), wear socks when outside, or to wear shoes that have a flexible sole. You should be able to bend the shoes in your hands. This will allow your child's feet and ankles to develop naturally. My SiL was on point, thanks "Dr. Robinson, Jr."! :)

With that being said, walking/running barefoot is a new trend taking over the running world as well, with the emergence of the FiveFingers shoe. It's said, that they help build your foot and ankle strength over time. They also, have FiveFingers in toddlers and kids sizes. Something to think about when Yus is between the ages of five and six. For now, he'll be wearing his socks and robeez, until I make a trip to StrideRite for his early walker soft motion shoes. Ah! the joy of motherhood.

Charity Running

I decided to run the Chicago Half Marathon in memory of my Nana (Run4Nana). I truly haven't trained since my high school track & cross county days, so this is a big step in the right healthy direction for me. I'm running to raise money for Diabetes Research & Action Education Foundation. This hits close to home for me as my Nana passed away from diabetes in April.
Surprisingly enough, I have found that training for this race in September has giving me much needed 'mommy time'. Running helps clear my mind before work and has helped me drop a few lbs that were sticking around.
.... more to come
