Healthy Living: Take 1
So, my competitive side has reared it's ugly head. In the past 2 or 3 months my handsome husband has lost approximately 40lbs. SERIOUSLY, I just can't deal. I'm still carrying around this 30lbs that just won't go away. I refuse to call it "baby weight" since my baby Yus is now a year and half. My "baby weight" window has expired. Clearly I have NO MORE excuses (since my husband can do it) and with the summer quickly approaching I have to get my butt in shape literally and figuratively.

Since, March starts, the Spring/Summer event calendar with his graduation, a Mike Epps show (gifted by my lovely MiL), my BFs wedding, and then a family vacation. Not to mention I turn 27 this year. Like, seriously I can't be the unfit chick in the family photos anymore. It's just not hot.

So, things must change and I'm taking it one step at a time. First, up my food in-take. I've cut out sugar and limited the starches. Which means, when dinning out, I'll I be scoping the menu before hand for the healthiest options.

Kudos to me because I didn't par-take in the VDay sweets and I even walked into Dunkin Donuts and bought munchkins and donuts for Yus' class and his teachers and didn't have notta one. HOLLA! I inhaled a lot though while I was in there. :) It just smelled so mmmmm good.
It's worked in the past and I need to start doing it again.

So see ya later unfit momma...

Support & Accountability

I came across some great running blogs that have me so pumped. It's great motivation to read other women's stories about running and health & fitness. Thanks to Black Girls Run, Run Wifey Run, & In the Gym; for all that you do to keep women on the move. I also added the daily mile widget to my home page to keep me accountable. I noticed that they have buttons for mileage completion, so when I finish the Chicago Half Marathon on September 11th, I will definitely be adding the 13.1 button. I'm a sucker for free gear!! So, let's raise a sneaker to a healthy life.

Chicago Half Marathon

I've always wanted to be a 'runner'. I ran track and cross country in high school and in college I maintained a healthy weight. But like most of us women, once I got married, I kinda let my self go. You know, I got comfortable with being a wife and then I got pregnant. I gained 60 lbs with my son Yusuf and while I considered myself stylish and trendy during pregnancy. Losing the weight and getting back to my 'fighting weight' was difficult. I decided to take the challenge and start running again.
I got serious about running when my Nana passed in April 2011. I wanted to make her fight with diabetes mean something and to also take control of my own health. A doctor would consider me predisposed to the disease since both my maternal and paternal grandmother 's had diabetes.  I started running June 1st, four days before my Nana's 72nd birthday and on her birthday June 5th, I signed up to raise money for the Diabetes Research and Action Education Foundation.  I'll be running my first official race, the Chicago Half Marathon for Run4Nana, through the Diabetes Action Team. I've been doing a run/walk 12 week program that is conveniently an app on my phone. It's not easy but neither is living with diabetes and doing this 13.1 mile race in my Nana's memory will make finishing that much sweeter.
